Twinkie Cake

Print ME! Print ME!

Oh mercy.  I just showed this gem to my husband and apparently I am making this for dessert tonight.  I am going to use a from scratch recipe, because I don’t want to go to the store.  From a newspaper clipping, circa 1958.

1 yellow cake, bake according to box directions. Let cake cool, slice into halves.  Fill with filling, put back together.

Filling:

  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 T. flour

Mix together. Cook over low heat until thick.  Let cool.

  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 stick oleo
  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 1 t. vanilla

Beat until fluffy.  Add above mixture and beat until fluffy.

So how did it come out? I have some boys here who love Twinkies so I can’t wait to hear!

My husband liked it a lot, I thought it was pretty unnatural. The combination of the uncooked flour, butter and shortening was a little odd. I think it would be really good with a yellow cake and some homemade simple whipped cream. Or at least no shortening. I did make your cookies though and they were awesome! Thanks again!
