- 1 1/2 c. sourdough starter
- 2/3 c. milk
- 2 T. sugar
- 1 1/2 ts. vanilla
- 1 T. melted butter
- 1 tsp salt
- 2-3 cups flour
- 1/2 tsp soda
- 2 T. melted butter
- 1 2/4 tsp. cinnamon mixed 1/3 c. sugar
- Powdered sugar glaze
Mix together first five ingredients in a large, non-metallic bowl. Stir in salt and enough flour to make a soft dough just stiff enough to handle. Turn out onto a well-floured board and sprinkle with 1/4 c. flour which has been mixed with the soda. Work flour in and knead for five minutes or more, adding more flour as necessary.
Place in a buttered bowl and turn once to butter top. cover and let rise until double, about 3 hours.
Punch dough down, turn out onto floured board and roll out to 9×18 rectangle. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle evenly with cinnamon sugar mixture. Roll up and cut into 1 inch slices. Arrange with sides touching in a buttered 9×13 pan. Cover and let rise until doubled, 2-3 hours. Bake at 400 for 20-30 minutes.
Brush warm rolls with a glaze made from 1/4 c. powdered sugar, 1 T. milk and 1/4 tsp vanilla.
Makes 18 rolls.

These sound absolutely fantastic and I want a cinnamon roll right this minute. I do not however want to spend six hours making them. And I still don’t have that sourdough starter. sigh.

I made these for the first time and they were without question the best cinnamon rolls I’ve ever had! They were light and fluffy with a perfect texture. I made a vanilla buttercream glaze with sour cream to drizzle on top. Heavenly!

Aren’t they fantastic? I tried them a couple of weeks ago, and I think about them all the time. Next time I am going to freeze the dough so it doesn’t take so long. I want your glaze recipe!

Hi! This is my first time on your site! I’m so glad I visited! I’m going to make these on Saturday and start them Friday night. I’m hoping that will cut down on the wait Saturday morning.

Thanks for stopping by! When I make these I usually make a double batch and freeze half of it so the next time there is no waiting!

They are in the kitchen rising for the second time – can’t wait. I’ll let you know how they turn out. I’m new to baking with sour dough. Could you share how to freeze the dough. Be specific – freezing for dumbies!! Thanks!

What I do is prepare them through all the steps, except instead of baking them I put them on a cookie sheet, not touching, and freeze them. Once they are frozen I take them off the cookie sheet, it helps if you put down some parchement paper or one of those silicone baking mats, and dump them all into a ziplock freezer bag.
Then when you want to make them, you take them out of the freezer and let them thaw, and put them in the pan like the recipe says.
I haven’t tried it, but I bet you could thaw them in the refrigerator over night.
Hope that helps!

I don’t even like cinnamon rolls but the fam does and I needed something to do with my starter. YUM! I even like them! And except for the long rising time they are super easy.
