Sloppy Joes

Print ME! Print ME!

From Saveur

Saveur found this recipe in a book called My Best Meat Recipes, put out by the National Live Stock and Meat Board in 1945.  I made it for dinner pretty much as soon as I read it, and it was fandiddly-tastic.

Sloppy Joes

Heat 2 T. butter in a large skillet over medium heat.  Add one small finely chopped yellow onion and one small cored, seeded, and finely chopped green bell pepper and cook until softened, about 15 minutes.  Add one pound ground beef and cook until browned, 6-8 minutes.  Add one cup ketchup, 2 T. mustard, 1 T. white vinegar, 1 T. sugar, and 1/2 tsp. ground cloves.  Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and cook, stirring occasionally, until thick and dark, 25-30 minutes.  (Degrease, if desired.)  Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.  Serve on buttered, toasted hamburger buns.  Makes 6 servings.

I love Sloppy Joes, really, I do. I just hate a lot of the stuff people put in. So this is how I make sloppy joes:

1 lb. ground meat (I use turkey)
1 can cream of tomato soup
    ketchup to taste.
Brown meat. Stir in entire can of soup. Add several glugs of ketchup and taste. If needed, add more ketchup. Serve on toasted rolls, or biscuits, if out of rolls.
