Old Fashioned Beef Stew

1/2 c. flour

1 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

2 lb stew meat  1″ pieces

6 cups hot wter

Veggies, all in one inch cubes.

3 potatoes

1 turnip

4 carrots

1 green pepper cut in strips

1 cup celery

1/2 c. onion

1 T. salt

2 beef bouillon cubes

1 bay leaf

Coat meat and brown in 2 T. shortening.  Add water, heat to boiling, reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 2 hrs.  Add vegs. etc. Cook 30 mins or until tender.  If desired, thicken with one cup cold water mixed with 2-4 T flour.  Mix and stir into stew.

John David is my brother.  This leads me to believe that this is an Alzheimer’s era recipe, because the only thing my brother has ever cooked is Macaroni and Cheese, and that might be a complete fallacy.   Perhaps he was there with her when she made it and suggested that she add more pepper or something and gave him credit.
